Aro Lingma

Khyungchen Aro Lingma

(1886-1923)

Khyungchen Aro Lingma was a pure-vision gTértön, a discoverer of spiritual treasures. She received several cycles of practice directly from Yeshé Tsogyel, the female Buddha and consort of Padmasambhava. These practices were unique and extraordinary, as they consisted of awareness-being (meditational deity) forms that are all manifestations of Padmasambhava and Yeshé Tsogyel. Here she holds the mélong – the wisdom mirror – which is the primary symbol of Aro Lingma. The chö-phen (streamers) appended to the mélong are also particular to the Aro gTér tradition, and symbolise the infinite inter-relationship with the elements. Here the Aro chö-phen is shown in simplified form rather than its elaborate form.
