Jomo Sam’phel

Jomo Sam’phel

Tsogyel Gé’phel Jong – December 1998

Jomo Sam’phel, amongst many other aspects, is a practitioner of Yeshé Tsogyel and Padmasambhava. Ngakma Shardröl relates that Jomo Sam’phel was once asked about her practice by a Western visitor. Jomo Sam’phel confided that she practised Padmasambhava by day and Yeshé Tsogyel by night. When asked about the difference between the two, she simply said: They are the same but the questioner apparently did not understand what was being said.

Ngak’chang Rinpoche’s comment on this story is that:
The questioner assumed that Jomo Sam’phel meant that there was no difference between the two practices, and therefore failed to apprehend her direct transmission of the nature of Mind. Yeshé Tsogyel and Padmasambhava are none other than emptiness and form – wisdom and compassion – and so for Jomo Sam’phel to say that they are the same, is the same as saying that she dwells in rigpa. For Jomo Sam’phel to have pointed this out was a great kindness – and could have been a startling moment of transmission. Such opportunities are sadly often missed.
